All About Old-Time Radio Shows Legend Fred Allen
Fred Allen hosted his long time run "The Fred Allen Show" which aired from 1932 to 1949; in fact the show went by many other names. The listeners really enjoyed this show because it was very entertaining and provided a lot of humor and laughter for Sunday nights.
Allen worked hard to produce Old Time Radio Shows that incorporated the events of the day. A keen newspaper reader, Allen was able to use the newspaper clippings to put together scripts for his forthcoming broadcasts. Often he used lesser-known news items to create a comic centerpiece for his show.
Born in 1893 in Cambridge, MA, Fred grew up with his aunt following his mother's passing at an early age. Fred joined the Boston Public Library after learning to play the piano from a young age. In addition, he began learning to juggle. These three interests help him to learn more about comedy and hone his skills.
He started his comical career when he competed in multiple contests. Over the next decade, he performed in much vaudeville theatre, so he could travel the world. "The Passing Show" soon drew Fred away from vaudeville and to Broadway theater. This show brought him closer to his future wife, Portland Hoffa.
In 1932 he began his career in old time radio when he hosted The Linit Bath Review on CBS. In 1933 his show became the Salad Bowl Review sponsored by Hellman's Mayonnaise. The Sal Hepatica Revue was what he moved on to by 1934, and it was this that eventually became the Hour of Smiles. The Fred Allen Show became just that following a short stint of the show being called Town Hall Tonight.
By the end of June 1949, The Fred Allen Show had come to an end. Over the years his wife Portland appeared as his sidekick adding to the comedy. But perhaps what Allen is known best for is his feud with real-life friend Jack Benny.
With Benny, Allen started a so-called public 'feud'. In actuality, the whole thing just happened by chance, and as listeners enjoyed the funny elements to it all, the writers and the comedians were told to meet in order to maximize on the popularity opportunity. The feud grew in its legendary status while the entertainers stayed professional about it all. They even co-starred in two films together, "Love Thy Neighbor" and "It's In the Bag"!
When the original Old Time Radio Shows came to a conclusion, he featured in multiple appearances in The Big Show. He even went to writing to express himself. Treadmill to Oblivion and Much Ado About Me were his two autobiographies.
While on a late night walk, Fred Allen suffered from a fatal heart attack at the age of 61. He was given a worthy appreciation when accepted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1988. While he has been gone for a long time, he is still remembered very much for his classic old time radio recordings which presented plenty of humor and comedy.
