Choosing An Eotech Sight
Eotech make a huge range of holographic sights and it can take a while to pin down the exact one for you. However, each sight is a unique combination of features from which you can choose to get the sight which best suits your application. Take the time to work through the following list and you'll have the right sight for you!
Suitability for use with NV. To keep the price down, Eotechs intended for action shooting, hunting and most law enforcement applications are supplied without the night vision settings. The models without night vision are the XPS2 series, 512, 516 and 517.
Price. If you want the least expensive Eotech go for the models without night vision capability (see above)
Close mounting capability. To allow very close mounting of night vision devices, some Eotechs have their buttons moved to the left hand side of the unit from the back. The EXPS, 556 and 557 have side mounted buttons and are NV buttons. The 516 and 557 have side mounted buttons but are not NV compatible.
Height of the sighting plane. To enable co-witnessing in the bottom third of the sight, and to allow the maximum adaptability to different night vision sight configurations, some Eotechs come supplied with a 7mm riser.These are the 516, 517, 553, 555, 556 and 557. The EXPS mount is 7mm higher than the XPS as standard.
Mounting system Eotechs come with one of three mounting systems depending on how fast you want to be able to remove and replace the sight. The XPS, 516, 517, 556 and 557 use the thumb screw, the EXPS, 553 and 555 have quick release levers and everything else uses alan bolts.
D-ring clearance. Some Eotechs are made so that their battery housing is cantilevered to clear the Delta ring (the ring that retains the handguard) on AR15/M16/M4 rifles. These models are the XPS and EXPS series and the 516, 517, 556 and 557.
Length. Eotechs vary greatly in length. This is important if you want to mount something else (night vision for example) on your rail with the holographic weapon sight. The AA battery models are longest, followed by the CR123 battery models and the shortest are the XPS and EXPS models. The XPS and EXPS are 3.5" long, the 553 4.9", the 556 5.0", the 512, 516 and 552 5.4"and the 517, 555 and 557 5.6".
Ballistic reticle. Only three models feature ballistically matched dots - the 557.AR223 is matched to the 5.56mm NATO round, the 552.XR308 to the .308 Winchester and the 552.XR500 to the .50 Browning Machine Gun. The 557.AR223 has side mounted brightness and NV buttons whilst on the 552.XR.308 they are mounted at the rear. A two dot arrangement is employed by the XPS2-2, XPS3-2 and EXPS3-2.
Batteries. Eotech have gone from 'N' batteries to AAs and CR123s and in doing so vasty increased battery life. The choice boils down to AA or CR123 and there are often models that only differ in this respect (the 553 and 555 for example). The AA has significantly longer battery life when used with lithiums (1000hrs vs 600) but CR123 models are more compact. The XPS and EXPS use a single transverse mounted CR123, the 516, 553 and 556 two CR123s and the 517, 552, 555 and 557 two AAs.
DoD type classification. The main military use models are the 552 and 553 series - the latter specifically designed for and used by United States Special Forces COMand (SOCOM). The 555 is an AA battery 553 and thus shares its heritage.
Color. The 512 series is available in black, Mossy Oak and Advantage Timber camoflage. The 553.A65 is comes in black or tan.
Integrated laser. The EOLAD series are the only Eotechs with integrated lasers.
