Appreciate Good Health. Losing Your Sight Or Hearing Would Make Things So Much More Difficult And Prevent You From Doing So Many Things You Like
Everyone has diverse interests and hobbies which they become interested in over the years. Often these can be things which we are encouraged by parents or teachers to take an interest in whilst we are children. Others we are introduced to by friends. Some we explore ourselves after hearing about them or watching them on television and others may originate from jobs we have done. There are a number that we will abandon as we get older and others that we can only become involved in once we reach a certain age.
I have an acquaintance who has always been into sewing, and she has made some beautiful dresses until recently. But she is now struggling with difficulties with her eyes, and until the full scope of her problem is fully diagnosed, she doesn’t know if help is available to correct her eyesight. But if nothing can be done, she will have to give up doing the thing which she loves doing most.
This prompted me to think about some of the things that interest me and how many of the things that I like doing would not be so much fun if my eyesight became very bad or I started to go deaf. Since my number one favourite obsession is music – listening to it, going to experience my favourite bands live, spending the weekend at music festivals and collecting music related bits and pieces, I can’t even begin to comprehend how I would react if I could never hear my favourite albums by my favourite artists ever again.
But then, most of my other hobbies depend very much on my eyesight. I read as much as I can and always have a huge mound of books which I like the look of and am trying to get the time to sit and immerse myself in them. I have fun taking photos, so not being able to see clearly enough to get a good shot would be utterly demoralising in the first place, but then not even managing to see at all to enhance the photos using software programs would make it worse.
I like watching many different sports, and whilst I assume that if I was watching a match on television, the commentator’s words would articulate what I couldn’t view for myself, I’m not convinced that I would have as much fun going to a football match if I wasn’t able to see myself what was taking place on the pitch. Another thing I enjoy doing is walking around historical buildings, museums and art galleries, and I believe it must be truly dreadful to not be able to view famous pieces of art or amazing pieces of architecture.
But that’s just a selection of my interests! There are so many different things that people look forward to doing in their own time, and the prospect of participating in a lot of them would be severely affected if the eyes cannot focus properly. Much like the person I referred to in the second paragraph, any arts and crafts related hobbies would become impossible to do as well as things including woodwork and DIY. Those who get involved in some sports or other outdoor hobbies, like rock climbing or bird watching, would find it far more difficult to continue getting involved with poor eyesight.
Of course, not all sight or hearing problems are untreatable or permanent, so many people can generally get back to what they like doing once they’ve undergone diagnosis and treatment. On occasions that treatment can be as straightforward as a short course of drugs if the problem is caused by some type of infection. At other times, external assistance can sort things out – a hearing aid, reading glasses, contact lenses and so on, but with some pursuits these are not ideal. For an individual who participates in water sports and cannot wear glasses or lenses because of the water splashing, Laser eye treatment is a possibility to enable ongoing participation, and as far as surgical procedures are concerned, Laser eye surgery is one of the less expensive operations to have carried out.
Other more severe complaints may take longer to diagnose and then demand more long term treatment, but, for the eyes, Laser eye surgery is a comparatively quick and easy solution for a number of complaints. Also, for some sorts of hearing problems, surgery is a potential solution too.
I have some minor eye problems which are corrected by glasses (sadly Laser eye not generally available for my complaint), and I find it a nuisance always having to carry my glasses with me, but just contemplating what individuals have to give up if they can no longer hear or see properly makes me appreciate the fact that I can still see well enough to do the things I like most, and thankfully my hearing is just fine, despite decades of loud music!
